COMMISSIONERS-HOMESTEAD

2019-10-16T11:20:43-05:00

Martin County Commissioners heard from County Assessor Mike Sheplee on Tuesday concerning an update to the county’s homestead application policy. As part of the new policy, a letter will be sent out to about 4,100 county residential taxpayers who do not currently have a homestead application on file, due to a misunderstanding of how long to keep track of homestead applications. Those who do not return the form will see an effect on their 2020 property taxes. “In 2015, the Minnesota Historical Society put out a new general retention schedule, and on that schedule was the requirement that homestead applications [...]

HUMPAL-PAID LEAVE

2019-10-15T11:30:06-05:00

After a lengthy closed session following the regular meeting Monday night it was revealed that Fairmont City Administrator Mike Humpal is on paid administrative leave, effective today, and Troy Nemmers, city engineer/public works director, has been named city administrator on an interim basis. The council voted 3-2 to place Humpal on paid leave “indefinitely.” No reason was given for the action, and there was no discussion afterward. At the beginning of Monday’s council meeting, a vote to approve the agenda resulted in the council’s familiar 3-2 split, with Peters and Hasek wanting the closed session evaluation removed, saying they had not [...]

HOUSING TAX ABATEMENT

2019-10-15T11:26:33-05:00

A tax abatement program to spark construction of multi-family housing failed to win approval from the Fairmont City Council on Monday. Linsey Preuss, Fairmont’s economic development coordinator, told the council that Fairmont has a “very low” 2 percent vacancy rate for rental housing, which can make it difficult for area businesses to secure an adequate work force. The proposed program would aim to spur development of more housing options, with the abatement for 10 years of real estate tax increases resulting from the new multi-family housing built in the city limits. The program already has received unanimous support from the [...]
