State Representative Bob Gunther (R-Fairmont) announced today that he will not seek re-election and will retire following the conclusion of his current term in January, 2021.

“I’d like to thank the citizens in House District 23A for their support over the years and for the opportunity to represent their interests in St. Paul,” Gunther said. “It has truly been an honor and a privilege, but after nearly twenty five years of being in the political arena I am ready to spend more time with my family.”

Gunther was first elected to the Minnesota House in a special election in 1995, and is currently serving his 13th term in the Minnesota House.

Gunther is the current Republican Lead on the Minnesota House Jobs and Economic Development Finance Division. He has previously served as chairman of the Jobs and Economic Development Finance Committee, the Greater Minnesota Economic and Workforce Development Policy Committee, and the Legacy Funding Finance Committee. He also has served previously as an Assistant Minority and Assistant Majority Leader.

Among his career highlights, Rep. Gunther points to laws he championed that encouraged businesses to expand and relocate in rural Minnesota, challenge grants that made it easier to obtain affordable workforce housing, securing funding for the St. James library by overriding the governor’s veto, and creating the I-90 corridor, which brought Republican and Democrat lawmakers together in order to better fight for the interests and needs of southern Minnesota.

Gunther said he is making his retirement announcement now in order to give others in the district time to consider running for the office.

“While I am not seeking re-election, residents should remember that I will continue to represent them until a new state representative is seated in 2021,” Gunther said. “As always, I encourage them to contact me with any legislative questions or concerns.”
