Mayo Clinic Health System recently donated $4,000 to Martin County Public Health to go toward establishing a mental health first aid program. The mental health training will be delivered to medical, school and city staff. “Treating a patient’s physical health is just one piece of a person’s overall health and well-being,” says James Hebl, M.D., regional vice president of Mayo Clinic Health System. “We are proud to support Martin County Public Health in establishing a training program dedicated to mental health awareness and education.”

The Fairmont City Council on Monday took a big step toward committing to the proposed community center. The approval of $14 million from the city did contain a couple of conditions. Before any taxpayer money can be used to build the facility, the Community Center Committee first must raise an additional $6 million in pledges for the project, and the YMCA must enter into a lease agreement with the city to operate the center. The office of Minnesota Management and Budget (MMB) on Thursday released their annual November Budget Forecast. The report, which details the state’s budget picture, projected a surplus of $1.62 billion for 2020-21 budget cycle. By statute, $284 million of the surplus is allocated to the budget reserve, which is now full funded at $2.36 billion. After the reserve transfer, Minnesota is left with a $1.33 billion surplus. A woman was fatally shot Wednesday during a bank robbery in a Kossuth County, Iowa town and a suspect is in custody, investigators said. Mitch Mortvedt of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said the suspect was detained hours after the robbery and shooting at the Security State Bank, the only bank in Lu Verne, a town of about 250 people. Mortvedt said a female employee was “just walking into the bank” when she was shot Wednesday morning. The Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office identified the woman as Jessica Weishaar, 43, of Algona. The Martin County Board took a final look at the proposed 2020 budget at Tuesday's meeting, the final one before adopting it at the next meeting on Dec. 17. The board is now looking at a 4.91 % increase in the levy for next year that would be an $800,743.00 increase. Martin County Commissioners heard from Planning and Zoning official Pam Flitter on Tuesday during a public hearing to consider a proposed 2020 fee schedule for her department.
