Citing low usage on evenings and weekends, Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont has restructured its surgical services, resulting in the reduction of six positions. A press release Wednesday announced that effective Jan. 2, the positions of four nurses, one health unit coordinator who handles scheduling and one sterile processing technician who prepares surgical equipment and supplies will be eliminated. A vote to renew a Truman Public School operating levy passed Tuesday. Two questions were on the ballot. The first asked if the levy should be renewed and the second asked for approval of additional levy value.The first vote passed 438-179. The second passed 356-246. The levy is for $852 per student. Of that amount, voters needed to renew $128. The Legislature allows the district the remaining $724 in local optional revenue. Martin County Commissioners on Tuesday heard from County Assessor Mike Sheplee, who noted progress on updating the county’s homestead application files. As part of a new policy, a letter was sent out in October to about 4,100 county residential taxpayers who did not have a homestead application on file, due to a misunderstanding in Sheplee’s office about how long to keep homestead applications. Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont recently awarded a $1,500 Hometown Health Grant to Fairmont Junior/Senior High School, which will be used to develop “Wellness Rooms” to support students’ health and well-being. Wellness Rooms give students the opportunity to take supportive breaks and learn coping strategies so they can focus better in class. Hometown Health Grants support local not-for-profit organizations for projects and initiatives that focus on enhancing general health and wellness, as well as community health education.
