Fairmont has been selected to host the 2020 Minnesota Governor’s Pheasant Hunting Opener. Governor Tim Walz made the announcement Friday night during the 2019 Pheasant Opener banquet in Austin. Visit Fairmont, the local convention and visitors bureau, submitted the application to host the 2020 Minnesota Governor’s Pheasant Opener. Fairmont was selected through an application process that considered available hunting land, event facilities, travel recreation opportunities and community support. The 2020 event, scheduled for Oct. 9-10, will be the tenth annual Governor’s Pheasant Hunting Opener. The Minnesota Supreme Court held a traveling oral argument in front of students at Fairmont High School on Wednesday. Fairmont students in grades 9-12 attended, along with students from Martin County West, Truman, Martin Luther, Granada-Huntley-East Chain, Redwood Falls and from Blue Earth Area’s law class. The event took place in the Performing Arts Center at Fairmont High School. Students were then given the opportunity to ask questions. For a little over 20 years, Martin County has been dealing with with an outdated jail building and limited courthouse space. On Wednesday, state Rep. Bob Gunther, R-Fairmont, and members of the Minnesota House of Representatives Capital Investment Committee were able to see the problems firsthand, as part of a tour of southwestern Minnesota. Martin County is asking the state for $20 million in 2020 to help with construction of a new justice center. On Friday, Oct. 11,the Cardinal football game in Fairmont will be a “Tackle Cancer” event, through the Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund. The game starts at 7 p.m. Fairmont will play Norwood Young America. Cyndi Johnson, a retired Fairmont High School English teacher, is coordinating this year’s activities and fundraising. The Fairmont football team will autograph a football to be raffled off during the third quarter of its game. Raffle tickets are $5 and can be purchased the night of the game through halftime. The Fairmont Area School Board Tuesday approved the Assurance of Compliance Report for 2019-20. The board also: Approved holding the 2019 payable 2020 tax levy hearing at 6 p.m. Dec. 10 at City Hall.
